Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 19, 2026 · Cakin' It, Toronto, ON, Canada
Hey there! We're Cakin' It, a boutique custom cake bakery based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information we collect when you use our website (cakinit.ca), place an order, inquire about a custom cake, or register for one of our workshops. We've done our best to make this easy to read — because nobody should need a law degree to understand what happens with their info.
This policy is prepared in compliance with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable Ontario consumer protection requirements.
1. Who We Are and Who to Contact
Cakin' It is the organization responsible for the personal information collected through this website. If you have any questions, requests, or concerns about your privacy, please reach out — we're happy to help:
- Email: info@cakinit.ca
- Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
2. What Information We Collect
We only collect information that's genuinely needed to serve you. Here's what that looks like:
When you place an order or send us an inquiry:
- Name — so we know who we're baking for
- Email address — to send you order confirmations
- Phone number — in case we need to reach you quickly about your order
- Delivery address — only if you select delivery (pickup orders don't need this)
- Order details — cake size, flavour(s), event/delivery date, cake message, candles preference, topper choice, add-ons, colour or design selections, and any special requests you share with us
- Reference photos — if you upload inspiration images to help us design your cake (optional)
When you register for a workshop:
- Name, email, phone number, and your class selection
If you opt in to our mailing list:
Our checkout and workshop registration pages include an optional checkbox to join our mailing list. If you tick that box, we store your name, email address, and phone number in a separate mailing list database along with the type of inquiry or order you placed. You can ask us to remove you at any time by emailing info@cakinit.ca.
Automatically when you visit our website:
- Theme preference — we save your dark/light mode choice locally in your browser (this never leaves your device)
- Cart contents — items you add to your cart (product name, size, flavour, price, add-ons, and custom options) are stored in your browser's local storage until you complete or abandon your order. This data stays on your device and is only transmitted to us when you submit the checkout form.
- Standard server logs may record your IP address and browser type; we don't actively process or store these beyond what our web host automatically captures
We do not collect payment card details. Orders are confirmed with a 50% retainer sent by e-transfer through Interac to payment@cakinit.ca. That transaction is processed entirely by your bank and Interac under their own terms — we only receive the funds.
3. Why We Collect It (Our Purposes)
We collect your information for the following reasons:
- To process and fulfill your order or class registration — this is the main one. We can't bake your cake without knowing who you are and what you want.
- To communicate with you — confirmation emails, and follow-up on any questions we or you have.
- To send marketing updates (only with your consent) — if you opt in to our mailing list, we may send you occasional updates about new flavours, upcoming workshops, and seasonal offerings. You can unsubscribe at any time.
- To improve our service — understanding what people order helps us plan better (we look at trends, not individual profiles).
- To comply with legal obligations — like keeping records for tax and accounting purposes.
We will not use your information for any other purpose.
4. Your Consent
By submitting a form on our website, you're giving us your consent to collect and use your personal information for the purposes described in this policy. This is what PIPEDA calls "implied consent" — you're choosing to engage with us, and we're using your info to make that happen.
5. How We Use and Share Your Information
We use your information internally to process orders and communicate with you. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
In limited cases, we may share your information with:
- Our email service provider — to send you order confirmations and replies. They process your email address on our behalf under their own security standards.
- Our web hosting provider — who stores the database where order records are kept. They act as a data processor and are bound by appropriate security measures.
- Legal or regulatory authorities — if we're required by law (like a court order or government request) to disclose information, we'll comply.
Third-party fonts and icons (Google Fonts, Font Awesome) are loaded from external CDNs when you visit our site. These providers may log your IP address as part of serving those files — please refer to their own privacy policies for details.
6. How Long We Keep Your Information
We keep your order records for as long as is reasonably necessary to fulfill the order, handle any follow-up, and meet our legal and tax record-keeping obligations (typically up to 7 years, as required under Canadian tax law). After that, we delete or anonymize the data.
Reference photos you upload are kept with your order record and deleted on the same schedule.
7. How We Protect Your Information
We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. This includes:
- Encrypted HTTPS connections on our website
- Password-protected admin access to order records
- Secure file storage for uploaded reference images
- Limited access — only the people who need your info to fulfill your order have it
8. Cookies & Local Storage
Our website uses local storage (a browser feature similar to cookies) to store two things on your device:
- Display preference — your dark/light mode choice. This never leaves your device.
- Shopping cart — the items you've added (name, size, flavour, price, add-ons, and any customizations). This stays on your device until you submit the checkout form, at which point it is transmitted to us as part of your order. It is cleared automatically after a successful submission.
We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or behavioral analytics tools. We do not run Google Analytics or any other third-party tracking service.
The third-party services we load (Google Fonts, Font Awesome CDN) may set their own cookies. You can manage or clear these through your browser settings.
9. Your Rights
Under PIPEDA, you have the right to:
- Access — ask us what personal information we hold about you
- Correct — request that we update inaccurate or incomplete information
- Withdraw consent — ask us to stop using your information (subject to legal obligations)
- Unsubscribe from marketing — opt out of our mailing list at any time by emailing us; we'll remove you promptly
- Delete — request deletion of your personal information, where we're not legally required to keep it
- File a complaint — if you're not satisfied with how we handle your request, you have the right to file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada
To exercise any of these rights, email us at info@cakinit.ca. We'll respond within 30 days.
10. Children's Privacy
Our website and services are not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we've accidentally collected info from a child, please contact us and we'll delete it promptly.
11. Links to Other Websites
Our website includes links to our social media pages (Instagram, TikTok) and to external services. Once you leave cakinit.ca, this privacy policy no longer applies — those platforms have their own policies that govern what they collect.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time if our practices change or the law requires it. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. If it's a significant change, we'll make it more obvious. Continued use of our site after any updates means you're okay with the revised policy.
13. Questions? Let's Talk.
Privacy policies can be a lot. If anything here wasn't clear, or if you have a question or request we didn't cover, just drop us an email.
